During feeding evaluations, it’s typically alongside a speech pathologist and occupational therapist. The OT is going to rule out any sensory issues that the child has with feeding, make sure that they’re holding the spoon correctly and able to drink from a cup and holding that correctly. Then a speech pathologist, look at, do they have the appropriate sensation to eat? Are they able to move their tongue around, the appropriate strength in their jaw, tongue, lips to appropriately chew the food, and then finally, make sure that they’re swallowing safely. After all of that is complete, during the evaluation we discuss with the parents and make a plan for treatment, whether that’s going to be with an occupational therapist, speech pathologist, or both. Currently there is no wait-list for this. We can get kids started in feeding therapy right away.
