What is a Lactation Consultant?
A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional who specializes in supporting breastfeeding individuals and families. They are trained to provide education, guidance, and support to help mothers and babies achieve successful breast-feeding experiences. Lactation consultants typically have extensive knowledge of lactation physiology, breastfeeding techniques, infant feeding behaviors, and common breastfeeding challenges.
What to expect when seeing a Lactation Consultant:
When seeing a Lactation Consultant, The provider will ask questions to learn more about you and your child’s birth and breastfeeding journey to date to help create a customized plan.
An oral motor examination will be completed to determine if there are any structural restrictions or tethered oral tissues (TOT’s) resulting in difficulty with feeding and eating.
A MetroEHS Pediatric Therapy therapist will provide you a detailed training and home program instructions on any oral motor or positioning adaptions that are recommended to optimize your babies feeding efficiency between visits.
